Citizens on Patrol (COPs)

Volunteer Description

Work in pairs as part of a non-confrontational, mobile, walking or bike team patrolling the community (particularly those areas that experience high incidences of crime such as theft from autos, break and enters etc.) for suspicious persons, vehicles or activity.


Sample Activities:

  • To patrol areas in personal vehicles (reimbursement for gas), bicycles, on foot or in the crime prevention vehicle.
  • To conduct car safety audits (Lock it or Lose it)
  • To work on crime prevention initiatives or programs that are offered free of charge to the public and in cooperation with the RCMP, depending on the ability and interest of the volunteer
  • To call police when suspicious activity is discovered
  • To record observations in the COPS notebook and activity log and be prepared to provide oral or written statement to the police


Time Commitment:

The estimated total hours will vary. You will have flexible days and times. The minimum requirement is 16 hours/month (4 hours/week). The length of time commitment is for one year.

Requirements:

  • Demonstrate reliability and willingness to take direction
  • Interest in community safety and crime prevention
  • Consent to a criminal record check and reference checks
  • Demonstrate respect to the public, volunteers and staff
  • Participate in the training and orientation (Special training required for bike patrols)
  • Sign and adhere to the Confidentiality and Volunteer Agreements
